I just watched We Need To Talk About Kevin. I tried to think of one word to describe it, and I came up with jarring. I felt a sense of dissonance during the entire film, because the disconnected relationship between the mother and son was so alien to me. Then again there are moments when I could really sympathize. Like when Kevin is sick and Eva is taking care of him, and he finally lets his guard down. Or at the end when they embrace at the end. There is real kinship between the two of them. I think it’s because they both finally realize that they are the only people who see each other for what they really are.
I love these kinds of movies that nothing is concrete, because they leave so much up for debate.
