This Is Why I Abstain From MTV

Today, MTV announced that they banned Lady Gaga’s music video Telephone, because they find it inappropriate. I swear to god, the eye rolling that occurred after I read this almost sent my eyeballs flying out of their sockets. I mean REALLY!?!

I was under the impression that MTV had banned all music videos. Clearly I was mistaken, but not without cause. To be fair, I do not watch MTV anymore, so obviously I’m not a reliable source, but when I have watched MTV its been all reality shows. When do they have time to show music videos, with 5 hour blocks of time taken up by marathons of True Life, Liz Gately faux-reality shows (The Hills, The City), Jonathon Murray shows (The Real World, RW/RR Challenges), disgusting dating shows, and The Jersey Shore? I mean, at least when I was younger they had Total Request Live ever day, but even then they didn’t show the whole music video. MTV is not Music Television anymore. Its a hegemonic platform that poisons our youth with unrealistic portrayals of people, ridiculous expectations, and detrimental goals.

Though IĀ  dislike MTV for their detrimental influence on pop culture, I do understand why they don’t play music videos anymore. Chronologically speaking, music is old! Its been around a lot longer than movies, and television, and because its been around longer, its further ahead in it’s development. Music is evolving. I truly feel like nowadays music is everywhere, and it is fabulous. MTV started out as a means to bring music to more people. Now with the internet, music is so much more attainable. Understandably MTV moved on from music, unfortunately their move was a step down. This is evident in the happenings of today. MTV banned the Telephone video because it was “inappropriate.” Whether it actually is or isn’t is not the point. The point is that everyone knows MTV does not play music videos anymore, and why should they when you can easily find them online at any point of the day? I know it, you know it, and they know it. Today’s announcement was not a means to answer why no one would see the video on MTV. Today’s announcement was an opportunity to pick up more publicity for the network. I feel sorry for anyone who has not realized this yet.

I do have some parting words. While abstinence programs do not work for sex education, they do work for general education. The only way you are ever going to get ahead in life is to abstain from MTV. It is not important to know what GTL is. It is important to know what H2O is. It is more important for you to know who Goethe is, than it is to know who Whitney Port is. Stop watching Snookie! Do you know why Snookie got punched in the face at a bar? It is because instead of reading a book she was too busy sculpting her poof! You will suffer the same fate if you do not wise up.

WWKTAT? Kendra would probably agree with me about MTV using Gaga as a way to get press. Unfortunately Kendra would probably not agree with me about abstaining from MTV. She quite enjoys their abhorrent programing. Personally, I have no problem with her liking MTV, because I think she is one of the most well read human beings I have ever met. She’s like Bethenny Frankel. SHE HAS IT ALL!
