Berating Betsy: Part One - My Girl

My friend Betsy is only 10 months younger than me, but knows nothing of pop culture 90s to present. She’s constantly upsetting me with her bewilderment, which typically ends with me scolding her. It’s not a healthy friendship. Especially when I go out of my way to ask questions that I already know how she’s going to answer.

Here’s the thing about Cabaret. I’ve seen the movie. If I could just watch the parts with Liza (with an Z) talking, I would be obsessed.

Look, bitch I’m not going to sit here and lie. “Cabaret” “Maybe This Time” and “Money” are all on my Musical playlist (yes, I have one of those, as every decent gay man should).

Sometimes I sing showtunes to my dog, Amos and “Cabaret” is one of them.

Men are the most horrible creatures, honey. They will ruin your life. Mark my words.

Ouiser Boudreaux, Steel Magnolias: A compendium of life lessons, bitch.

I just watched Dirty Girl, and I have to say I’m kinda obsessed with it. The soundtrack is killer. On top of that it’s funny, quirky, and original.

Wow. WOW! I just watched Weekend, and I am impressed. What a solid indie film? Typically movies about gay romance are campy or self-indulgent, but this movie was anything but. Pitch perfect really.
Its interesting because in the movie the character Glen talks about how straight people don’t care about gay sex, and I feel like thats a reason a lot of straight people will not want to see this movie, but those people are wrong. Alot of the topics adressed by this movie are universal to all people. Roger Ebert best explains it in his review:

Some aspects involve homosexuality, but this isn’t a “gay film.” Most people can identify with Russell and Glen. That’s because some of us are more open and some of us are more guarded. Some of us trust easily, and others more slowly. Some of us have sexual feelings that are not open for discussion. Some of us pretend to be who we think we “ought” to be, and do it so well that even close friends don’t know who we really are.

It’s a really good movie. I recommend it. It’s on Netflix Watch Instantly.

Two Ezra Miller movies in a row. I watched Another Happy Day and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. When I first read about this movie it said that it was a black comedy, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it that. There is certainly dark comedy, but I would say the drama tips the scale. I was a little disappointed with the ending. There was no resolution, but indie films are typically resolution-phobic.

I just watched We Need To Talk About Kevin. I tried to think of one word to describe it, and I came up with jarring. I felt a sense of dissonance during the entire film, because the disconnected relationship between the mother and son was so alien to me. Then again there are moments when I could really sympathize. Like when Kevin is sick and Eva is taking care of him, and he finally lets his guard down. Or at the end when they embrace at the end. There is real kinship between the two of them. I think it’s because they both finally realize that they are the only people who see each other for what they really are.

I love these kinds of movies that nothing is concrete, because they leave so much up for debate.

Diablo Cody, I fucking love you. Jason Reitman, you blow my mind.

Mae Whitman sells Scott Pilgrim for me.

Riddle Me This, Joseph Gordon Levitt

According to Hollywood Life (which is pretty in pink, but not reputable) Joseph Gordon Levitt is being considered to play The Riddler in the last Christopher Nolan directed Batman film.

What started off as a joke has become a reality —Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who stars in Christopher Nolan’s new film, Inception, is the director’s first pick to play The Riddler in the next installment of the Batman franchise!

“Chris really dug Joseph [as an actor],” a source close to the director tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively. “There was a joke at first between them [on the set of Inception] that Joseph wanted to read for Batman 3 and things heated up as filming continued.”

Adds the insider, “It’s not 100% confirmed that he’s getting [the role of The Riddler] but there’s certainly talk about it. Joseph is definitely on the short list.” This should make fans happy, especially as several fan sites have expressed a wish to see the 500 Days of Summer cutie score the role!

At first I had to pause when I read this. You can’t really speculate when it comes to Christopher Nolan. I have a feeling he’s like me. When someone tries to tell me how to do my job, or speculate what I’m about to do, I tend to do the exact opposite. Regardless I think JGL would kill it as Edward Nigma. I do have to say I think Nolan should pick a more epic villain for his “last” Batman movie. Personally I would go with the darker villains like Mr. Zsasz, Bane, or Black Mask. But like I said its pointless to speculate.
